About the Event
The Center for Hearing and Communication (CHC) is pleased to support this terrific event which is presented by the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA). HLAA's Walk4Hearing raises awareness of the challenges facing 36 million Americans with hearing loss and their families. Proceeds support HLAA’s mission to educate, provide support services, and advocate for people with hearing loss. CHC is grateful to HLAA for the funding we receive from this event.
“Hearing loss as a public health issue is largely misunderstood and remains under the radar screen,” reports Suzanne D’Amico, NYC Walk Chair, whose nine-year-old daughter has moderately severe hearing loss. “It’s important to get the word out that this complex condition affects people of all ages and impacts all aspects of everyday life,” says D’Amico. “We’re thrilled that each year, more families of children with hearing loss and hundreds of amazing walkers and volunteers from all walks of life are joining this important cause.”
Since the launch of the national Walk4Hearing series in six cities in 2006, the program has steadily gained momentum, expanding to 23 cities this year and raising more than $3.5 million to end the stigma of hearing loss and provide support and resources for hearing loss prevention. This is the fourth NYC walk and each year the NYC Walk has had the most participants and raised the most money of all of the organization’s walks. We are expecting 60 teams from organizations like CHC, schools, and audiology programs at universities to participate, along with families, co-workers, friends, etc. of HLAA members.
