Great news for the Deaf community! SignUp is providing American Sign Language interpreter video with select Disney+ movies. It's free for everyone and easy to use.
This is an amazing advancement in accessibility for the Deaf community and especially children who are learning American Sign Language.
Getting Started
To get started, click the button below to visit the SignUp website. You'll need to use Google Chrome, so if you don't already have it, click here to download.
On the SignUp website, simply download the Google Chrome Extension and you're ready to proceed to Disney+. There, you'll need to tap the extension tab (right) to turn on the ASL live video and select one of the available movies with an ASL interpreter. You can adjust or move the video box when you tap it.
SignUp is a fan-funded service that launched in 2021; over time they expect to expand their offering of interpreted movies.
Google's Live Caption
This is a good opportunity to remind everyone about Google's Live Caption, another accessibility tool that can enhance video viewing for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Launched in the summer of 2020, Live Caption provides captioning for any video you play in Google Chrome; it is free and user friendly. To enable the Live Caption feature, go to settings, then to advanced, to accessibility, and there you will find the option to turn on Live Caption.
I hope everyone finds these accessibility tools helpful! Feel free to contact me at cotero@chchearing.org with any questions you might have.
