Lines of Communication

A hallmark of the Center for Hearing and Communication’s (CHC) Pediatric Center is the Comprehensive Assessment Program, an enhanced intake experience in which parents of new pediatric clients meet together with the directors of CHC’s clinical departments—audiology, speech and language, education, and mental health—to ensure their child’s needs are understood and addressed from every angle.

Beyond the fun, the Turkening created a unique opportunity for CHC’s pediatric clients to practice important skills—including investigative journalism writing, and using clear question structure in back-and-forth conversation. As winter continued, CHC staff members grew to expect interruptions from mini-detectives demanding to know their whereabouts on the days that turkeys and snowmen appeared. We’re excited to spread the word about Hi, I’m Kai, a wonderful new children’s book by Christina Roberts, with a titular character inspired by her son Kai who receives services at the Center for Hearing and Communication (CHC). It’s a joyful, empowering read that celebrates identity, curiosity, and confidence. We connected with Christina to learn more about what inspired the book and what she hopes families will take away from it.

At the Center for Hearing and Communication (CHC), we see how important literacy is for learning math. Before a child can add or subtract, they need to understand words that describe math ideas, such as more, less, bigger, and smaller. Families can support this learning by reading together and pointing out math words in stories, using them during daily routines, and reinforcing them through play.

Before you dive into conversation, maybe offer your child with hearing loss some quiet time, along with a snack. Let them know you’re eager to hear about their day and will check in after they’ve had time to settle in at home and relax. One quick tip: the more specific your question, the more specific the answer. Open-ended questions like “How was your day?” often fizzle, while focused prompts get kids talking.

Summer is a time for fun—and also a great opportunity for students with hearing loss to strengthen academic skills and stay on track. That’s why the Center for Hearing and Communication (CHC) is offering Summer Academic Groups, designed to help children build on progress made during the school year while preventing summer learning loss.

CHC-FL office has exceeded its expectations, supporting more than 1,500 Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals in South FL each year.
