We’re always thrilled to hear from alumni of our children's program—the latest being Matthew Ricker who reached out to share major new developments in his life. We caught up with Matt in a quick Q&A on the 25th anniversary of his cochlear implant.

CHC: What have you been up to recently?
Matt: I graduated with my master’s degree in Public Relations in May 2024 from Iona University! I was also selected to be Commencement speaker at the graduation ceremony.
CHC: Congratulations! And we understand you've made a career move as well.
Matt: After working in employee benefits for the past several years, I decided I was ready for a change. The position of Assistant Director for Student-Alumni Engagement opened at Iona, and I applied right away. I got the position, and it is truly an honor working for my alma mater and with the alumni. I work with such a great team of people. and I am grateful for that! Part of my job is teaching two classes, which are mentorship and career exploration courses. I am teaching undergraduate students the importance of networking and working with a mentor. I really enjoy teaching, and I find it very rewarding!
CHC: You also host two podcasts—can you tell us about them?
Matt: I host two podcasts. One is called Chamber Chat. This one is all about small businesses. I interview a small business owner, and it gives them a chance to gain exposure in the community. The second podcast I host is called On the Rise. I interview Iona alumni on this one.
CHC: Looking back on your early days with a cochlear implant—what memories do you have?
Matt: In terms of my early days with a cochlear implant, I remember going to CHC and going to individualized and group speech therapy sessions. The staff at CHC always made the hard work seem like play! I made lots of friends over the years. I also remember how the device used to not be as portable as it is now. I used to have to wear a harness. Now, thankfully, it is behind the ear and much more portable.
CHC: Any final thoughts you'd like to share with the CHC community?
Matt: Special thanks to the hard-working staff at CHC! I would not be where I am today without them!
Thank you, Matt, for sharing your journey and for reminding us why CHC’s mission matters so deeply. We’re proud to be a part of your story and can’t wait to see what you do next!
