We're pleased to be an Official Charity Partner of the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon and proud of our team of six runners training for the big race, November 2nd, while raising funds to support our mission.

Sophie Scott, looking to run her first marathon, is a dedicated member of Team CHC who recently had the honor of being named to NYRR’s Team Inspire—a recognition reserved for runners whose stories of resilience and purpose uplift us all.

We asked Sophie how her marathon and fundraising journey was going and she shared this heartfelt perspective.

CHC: What inspired you to take on the challenge of the NYC Marathon and dedicate your run to CHC?

Sophie: The NYC Marathon has always felt bigger than just a race—it’s such an incredible mix of energy, resilience, and community. As a deaf runner, I know how much it matters to be seen and represented. Running for CHC felt like the perfect way to turn that into something meaningful and give back to a community I have everything to be thankful for in getting me to where I am today.

CHC: Marathon training can be grueling—what keeps you motivated on the tough days?

Sophie: On the hard days, I remind myself why I started—for everyone who’s ever felt unseen or underestimated. I know the frustrations of growing up deaf: when your cochlear implant battery dies in the middle of something important, when you ask someone to repeat themselves and get the dreaded "never mind," or when you just nod along in a group conversation hoping it’s enough. I’ve been there.

But I’ve learned to embrace my deafness, to build confidence, and to love this part of myself. Every mile is a reminder of how far I’ve come and how many people I’m running for. I want to bring awareness to the deaf community and inspire others to see that deafness has no barriers we can’t overcome. And honestly, my secret motivator is that I’m running to make it just a little harder for my future kids to beat my marathon time one day.

CHC: Looking ahead to race day, what do you ultimately hope to accomplish?

Sophie: When I cross that finish line, I hope the funds raised help CHC continue breaking barriers, giving more people access to hearing health, resources, and community. I want someone to see this journey and feel encouraged to chase something they once thought was out of reach.

CHC: And congratulations on being chosen to be part of Team Inspire!

Sophie: I’m so excited (and honestly still in disbelief!) to represent both the deaf community and CHC through this opportunity.
